Sticke Alt Ale

Big Bad Wolf

Style
Big Bad Wolf is a Sticke Alt Style Ale, based on our Little Red Cap Altbier, in which we have increased the malt, hops, and alcohol to create a strong, dark, hoppy imperial ale. Big Bad Wolf has an intense German Malt flavor, and a substantial hit of hops from a mix of German Noble, Czech Noble and American Hops. Dry Hopped to create a crisp hop aroma, this beer will keep you warm as the weather gets colder.
Characters
German Noble Hops – Magnum, Mittelfrüh, Polaris
Czech Noble Hops – Saaz
American Hops – Cascade
German Malts – Pilsner, Munich, Caramunich, Carafa
Story
Once upon a time the Big Bad Wolf had heard enough of the slander. For centuries, storytellers had painted him as some slobbering monster who couldn’t keep his paws off a basket and a grandma. The truth? He was just hungry—hungry for respect, for understanding, for a seat at the damn table.

Once Upon A Time -

The Big Bad Wolf had heard enough of the slander.

For centuries, storytellers had painted him as some slobbering monster who couldn’t keep his paws off a basket and a grandma. The truth? He was just hungry—hungry for respect, for understanding, for a seat at the damn table. But once you’re labeled the villain, good luck convincing anyone you’re not.

Red wasn’t innocent either. She was supposed to stay on the path, but curiosity and ego are a deadly mix. The Wolf tried to talk, to reason, to have an actual conversation, but all she could think about were the flowers. The girl wandered off, and somehow he’s the monster for following?

And Grandma—don’t even start. She was no frail old lady; she could swing a frying pan with lethal precision. The Wolf barely had time to say hello before she came at him like a woodland warrior. So yes, he defended himself. Yes, he might’ve eaten her. But really, who among us hasn’t overreacted at a family gathering?

Then came the huntsman, self-appointed hero of the story, swaggering in like he owned the forest. He didn’t save the girl out of courage—it was ego, plain and simple. He wanted the glory, the song, the story. And the world gave it to him.

Now, the Wolf sits in exile, legend and liar all in one. He watches new stories unfold—stories where villains wear crowns, heroes chase fame, and the truth gets buried beneath a basket of flowers. Maybe someday they’ll tell his side. Until then, he’ll keep the path warm for the next fool who wanders off it.

The Moral

Sticke Altbier is a darker, stronger seasonal version of the traditional Altbier. Invented by the Uerige brewery of Düsseldorf, traditionally the alt breweries will do one batch a year and serve it at the pub as a special for their locals. Today each of these breweries have a different time of year they will release this beer and it pours until it is gone.

Sticke is a local word that means “Secret”, meaning the brewery will not reveal the recipe. The altbier is a strong malty ale that is well balanced with hoppy bitterness. Traditional sticke alt would usually fall in around 8% ABV.

Speculation is that the original Sticke Altbier was due to a mistake made by the brewmaster that mismeasured the amount of malt that went into the batch, and to save the beer they spun it as sticke alt. Regardless of whether this mistake is true or not, it created a great tradition that we at Grimm enjoy carrying on.

Grimm first served this beer about 1 month after opening. Big Bad Wolf is part of the Fabled Series and as such is released sporadically as the brewmaster sees fit. As the name implies, this beer is the bigger badder version of Little Red Cap’s nemesis “The Big Bad Wolf”.
